Sh-Boom! Or how The Overtones conquer Switzerland in a dream of gold

It’s almost exactly a month ago since I first heard about The Overtones. So as you see I’m quite new in this Overtones universe. I hope my review brings you back the memories you had on your first Overtones experience or giving you a little taster if you’re waiting for your first gig of the five gents.

First of all I’m Stefanie, 23 years old, from Switzerland and totally addicted to music. So lucky me works in a multimedia store. This store is quite famous in Switzerland and also that store invited The Overtones to the annual company party.

While getting my dessert I just heard the woman on stage talked about “five british gentlemen from the UK”, that was enough to get all my attention. I left my dessert to see what kind of music those gents are doing.

I was in love from the first note they sang.

Normally I’m listening more to rock and alternative music but I always had a soft spot for fifties do-woop sound. Unfortunately they just performed three songs. My mind couldn’t really capture all the impressions in that short time. All I knew was that I really loved their sound and already had a little crush on Lachie.

Thanks to social media I got all the Overtones information really quickly. Never heard so much good stuff about a group in such a short time. Seems like these are top lads eh? So I was totally pleased as I heard that they were coming back to Switzerland for a showcase.

set listThe show took place in Kaufleuten in Zürich. It’s a really beautiful venue where it’s enough space for about 1000 people. On this showcase were just ladies allowed, which was a promise to be a loud night.

All I wanted, was to be in the front. When the curtain at 8pm drew and they started with “Sh-Boom” all I could stare at, was Lachie’s golden suit! My thoughts were like: “Gold. Gold? Gold! I never ever thought that I will say that but that guy looks hot in a gold suit!!”

My paralysed moment went over and the music went right into my legs. When there’s good music on I have to dance, that’s a bit unusual for a Swiss ;-)

Second song was “Come Back My Love”. I was already lost in that beautiful music and enjoyed myself so much. The guys recognized really fast that I was singing the songs and I got the most beautiful smiles from the stage. The guys were really fit and in a brilliant mood. Everyone said how much they like Switzerland and the fact that it was a ladies night.

I really tried to have a look at the suits of Mark, Timmy, Mike and Darren but I got a bit distracted by that gold, shiny Lachie. So I decided to take some pictures so anyone of you can have a look. Of course they all looked fabulous!

Next on the setlist was “Second Last Chance” followed by “Have I Told You Lately”. Lachie was a bit of a favourite, when he was singing, you could hear a lot of screaming, sighing and swooning.

After they made sure that there were no under 18 girls in the room, they decided to sing “Fuck You” instead of “Forget You”. At that point the audience was finally awake. I was no longer the only dancer and when they started with “Beggin’ ” we had finally some sing along. The vibes were really good for Swiss standard.

Hot gents and free alcohol, it works, everytime!

I had my five weak seconds when Lachie grabbed my hand to dance. What’s that with him being so amazing? ;-)

I enjoyed the whole gig it so so much. It’s hard to put that feelings you have on a great concert in words. I would say I always feel really released, excited and full of happiness. I was totally enchanted by their charm and voices. When they perform a song like “Goodnight Sweetheart” you just wish one of them comes down and dances with you to the moon and back. Simply beautiful.

“Gambling Man” was of course the highlight of the night. Everyone was now in the fifties mood. I was already a bit sad ’cause showcases are just short and after one of my favourites  “Why Do Fools Fall In Love” everything was finished. Disappointment was shown on all faces. Switzerland was totally in love with those five gents. And we all can’t wait until they’ll come back.

Now when I finish the writing I have to say that I’m really sad it was such a short concert. Wish I could tell you more. But I’m sure there will be a next gig here. And it would be an honour for me to write about it!

There was also a short signing session afterwards where I had the chance to chat a bit to Lachie and Darren. Cuteness overload. Real gents with a heartwarming charm! I’m so happy that I found this band and their incredible fans. I’m glad I can share that night with you with my written words. Hope you all enjoyed it.

Lots of love! xxx Stef

  • I love the final part of the set list. “Encore (if needed)”. Of COURSE it’s needed! When have The Overtones performed and not had to do at least one encore?

  • I loved reading this review as it describes perfectly that shboom moment when the lads sing and the
dancing has to follow! It’s great that so many are discovering the talent and charm of The Overtones :)
